Las Vegas watering schedule

In the Las Vegas valley, watering days aren't a suggestion. The Las Vegas Valley Water District assigns every address a group and a set of days, year-round, and running your sprinklers off-schedule counts as water waste.

First, find your group

Your watering group is tied to your specific address, not your neighborhood — two houses on the same street can land in different groups. Groups run A through F, and you can look yours up on the water district's site or find it on your bill.

The seasonal schedule

Winter is one day a week. Spring and fall are three. Summer is any day except Sunday.

Rules that apply to everyone

  • No sprinkler watering on Sundays — year-round, every group.
  • May 1 through August 31, no sprinklers between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Most of that water evaporates before it reaches a root.
  • Watering outside your assigned days is water waste and can result in a fine. Fees vary by meter size and by how many violations you've had in the past 18 months.
  • There are exemptions. The district publishes a list that covers hand watering and irrigation system testing, among other things — worth reading before you assume a repair visit or a hose breaks the rules. See the water waste exemptions →

How long to run each zone

Sprinklers

About 12 minutes total on an assigned day — but not in one go. Split it into three 4-minute cycles roughly an hour apart. Desert soil can't absorb 12 straight minutes; most of it runs down the driveway. Three short cycles let each soak in.

Drip

Drip should run longer and less often than sprinklers. The right number depends on your emitter flow rate, your soil, and what's planted. Established desert shrubs on drip need far less than most people give them — overwatering is the most common thing we find when a plant looks sick.

Grass and turf rules

Southern Nevada's rules go beyond watering days:

  • New grass is restricted. Since December 2021, irrigated grass has been banned in new commercial and residential development, with exceptions for schools, parks, and cemeteries.
  • Nonfunctional turf must go by January 1, 2027. Colorado River water can't be used on decorative grass at commercial, multi-family, government, and HOA properties — medians, streetscapes, entryways. Existing grass at single-family homes is exempt, and so are parks, playgrounds, and other genuinely functional turf.
  • There's money for conversions. Homes as well as commercial, HOA, and multifamily properties can be paid per square foot to remove turf. See our guide to the rebates.

These rules change. Southern Nevada's water restrictions have tightened repeatedly, and the schedule shifts with the seasons. Check the water district's site before you reset your irrigation clock each season rather than relying on this page — or on memory.
